Overview & Cultural Significance
Agni Theertham is the most famous of all theerthams in Rameshwaram, being the only one situated on the open sea. Located directly in front of the grand eastern gopuram of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, its waters are remarkably calm and devoid of violent surf, creating an ambiance of serenity and deep religious reflection.
According to sacred lore, Lord Agni washed away his sins in these waters after testing Goddess Sita’s purity. Taking a ceremonial dip (Snanam) in Agni Theertham before entering the temple is considered an essential prerequisite for completing the Rameshwaram Yatra. The shore is also holy for Pitru Tarpanam and ancestor propitiation rites.
