Overview & Cultural Significance
Kanyakumari, formerly known as Cape Comorin, is the magical geographical culmination of the Indian mainland. It is one of the rare places on earth where you can stand on the beach and witness both the sunrise and sunset over the open ocean, with the moonrise and sunset often aligning simultaneously on full-moon evenings.
Perched on sea-swept monolithic rocks just off the shore are the renowned Vivekananda Rock Memorial—where Swami Vivekananda attained spiritual enlightenment in 1892—and the towering 133-foot stone statue of the ancient Tamil philosopher-poet Thiruvalluvar. The holy Bhagavathy Amman Temple, Suchindram Temple, and Gandhi Memorial further enrich the journey.
