Overview & Cultural Significance
Coonoor is the second-largest hill station in the Nilgiris, celebrated for its tranquil ambiance, slower pace of life, and picture-postcard tea gardens. Located at an altitude of 1,850 metres, it enjoys a pleasantly mild microclimate year-round, making it a favorite retreat for birdwatchers, hikers, and tea connoisseurs.
The town is famous for Sim’s Park, an unusual 12-hectare botanical treasure planted with rare temperate and subtropical plant species, conifers, and flowering shrubs. Perched on surrounding clifftops are Dolphin’s Nose and Lamb’s Rock, delivering dramatic drop-off views into the Coimbatore plains and Catherine Falls gorge.
