Overview & Cultural Significance

Dhanushkodi, located at the southeastern tip of Pamban Island, is one of the most mesmerizing landscapes in the subcontinent. Once a bustling port town with direct ferry connections to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, it was swallowed by a catastrophic super-cyclone on the fateful night of December 22, 1964, earning the title of India’s most famous ghost town.

Today, a newly engineered coastal highway ribbons across the narrow sandspit flanked by open ocean on both sides, culminating at Arichal Munai (Land’s End). Here, visitors can stand at the exact point where the dark, energetic Bay of Bengal merges with the calm, turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mannar, gazing out toward Sri Lanka just 28 km away across Ram Setu.
