Overview & Cultural Significance
Rameshwaram is one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations in India, revered as one of the four cardinal Char Dham shrines and home to one of the twelve divine Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Located on Pamban Island in the Gulf of Mannar, this holy city is deeply rooted in the Ramayana, where Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva before constructing Ram Setu to reach Lanka.
The epicentre of spiritual devotion is the magnificent Ramanathaswamy Temple, renowned worldwide for possessing the longest temple corridor with over 1,212 intricately sculpted granite pillars and 22 consecrated theertham wells within the temple premises. Pilgrims from all corners of the world come to perform the sacred Snanam ritual to cleanse past karmas before offering prayers at the inner sanctum.
