Overview & Cultural Significance
Pichavaram, situated between the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries in Cuddalore district, is one of the most stunning ecological treasures in India. Spanning over 1,100 hectares, it ranks as the second-largest mangrove forest ecosystem in the world (after the Sundarbans), home to over a dozen rare species of salt-tolerant Rhizophora and Avicennia mangroves.
The hallmark experience is taking a serene wooden rowboat or motorboat safari operated by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC). The boats glide soundlessly beneath dense, intertwining root canopies that form natural emerald tunnels over shallow, sparkling waters. The reserve is a premier birdwatching habitat for migratory waterbirds.
