Overview & Cultural Significance
Tiruvannamalai, situated at the base of the sacred volcanic-shaped Mount Arunachala in northern Tamil Nadu, is one of the most spiritually charged places on earth. In Shaivite tradition, the mountain itself is worshipped as a living Shiva Lingam, embodying the Fire (Agni) element of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, where Shiva manifested as a boundless column of cosmic light (Jyotirlinga).
The historic Arulmigu Annamalaiyar Temple is a colossal 25-acre complex with four towering gopurams, including the eastern Raja Gopuram standing 66 metres tall. Millions of devotees undertake the 14-kilometre barefoot circumambulation ("Giri Valam") around the sacred mountain, especially on full-moon nights (Pournami), stopping to meditate at the serene Sri Ramana Maharshi Ashram.
