Overview & Cultural Significance
Palani, nestled at the foot of the Palani Hills in Dindigul district, is one of the most visited and venerated pilgrimage centers in South India. Dedicated to Lord Murugan as "Dhandayuthapani Swamy" (the ascetic youth holding a staff), this hill shrine represents the third of the sacred six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of the Tamil deity.
The temple sits atop Sivagiri hill, reached by climbing 693 stone steps, taking a funicular mountain winch, or riding the aerial ropeway car. The idol of Lord Murugan was consecrated thousands of years ago by sage Bogar using "Navapashanam"—a secret amalgam of nine poisonous medicinal herbs that transmutes into therapeutic nectar when bathed in ritual milk and sandalwood.
